Hi All,

There was an old documentary film on UK TV years ago about an American mechanical engineering company in the 1940s or 50s. It's name sounded like Jahco(pronounced Jacko)Engineering ... maybe Jacho or similar.

This company had astounding work practices for it's day ... practices which would look very familiar to any exectutive from a Japanese corporation today. Some wouldn't be tolerated in a workplace in todays PC world. One that struck me as incredible was a view of a huge machine shop, literally hundreds of lathes, milling machines and presses etc., and a guy arrives late for his shift, and is faced with a headlong dash to his idle machine, while ALL of his workmates catcall and bang metal until his machine starts up. The thing was that this was peer pressure to perform and get the job done ... not management pressure.

I would love to see this again, or at least find out more details of the company, where it was based and what happened to it.

Anybody able to help ??

The short subject you are asking about is "The March of Time" volume 9, number 12. The title is "Bill Jack vs. Adolph Hitler" (1944)and it runs approximately 18 minutes.

It was briefly issued by New Line Home Video in the US in 1996 as part of a four volume set of "The March of Time" short subjects.

The film gives viewers a tour of war production methodology and employee relations at the JAHCO Manufacturing Co. in Cleveland, Ohio.

You are correct in suggesting JAHCO was far ahead of competition in the area of labor relations.

Sorry,

Been travelling and hadn't got 'net access.

Had a look at the Jaco site, but doesn't seem to be the same company.

Thanks for your help.
